Could you explain the meaning of "back pressure" in http://wiki.analog.com/resources/fpga/docs/hdl?

Dear all,

Today I have been studying ADI Reference Designs HDL User Guide [Analog Devices Wiki] again ever since I built the Zedboard and AD-FMCOMMS3 system project last month.

I saw "back pressure" appeared when talking about the AXI-stream interface.

Here are those original words:The important thing is understanding how back-pressure is handled, not finding signal equivalents. The ADC supports NO back-pressure mechanism. You must accept data on the bus in definite time intervals (defined by the sampling rate). There are no exceptions.

I don't understand what are signal equivalent or what is back-pressure?

R.
